Today, a pet friendly policy is not unusual. Both Boomers and Millennials – the largest renter demographics – love their furry friends. So, how do you make your community stand out from other pet friendly apartment options? By offering amenities for Fido and Morris of course!
Adding a pet park or a dog run will boost pet owners’ enthusiasm. But, many luxury apartment communities are taking it a step farther by offering dog walking, doggy daycare, pet washing stations, pet spas and grooming services. Some larger communities even offer rooftop dog walks where managers can hold pet events like “Yappy Hour” which gives pets and their owners the opportunity to mix and mingle. If you can’t offer these services at your community, have a list of recommended boarding and grooming establishments at the ready for residents.
You can show your devotion to Fluffy and Snoopy by incorporating them into community events. Many pet owners love dressing up their dogs (and sometimes even cats) for Halloween. Have a costume contest with both Best Human and Best Pet Costume categories. Or, host your own kennel club show! Pets also make great photo ops which can be shared on social media sites.
Once your pet friendly amenities are in place, don’t forget to advertise! According to HotPads, only one-third of rentals explicitly identify themselves as pet friendly. You also want to market special amenities and accommodations you make for pets. Let people know you opted for the organic, pet (and child) friendly fertilizer this spring! Providing pet incentives and broadcasting the news will help you compete for that coveted pet owner demographic.
