The Daily Gazette Finds that Pets Are Surrendered to Capital Region Shelters Because Owners Can’t Find Apartments that Take Pets
Van Allen Apartments Offers A Solution with “Pets Are Welcome” Policy
For “Furry Tenants Aren’t Always Welcome” in the Daily Gazette, editor John Cropley interviewed staff at local animal shelters and found that Capital Region pet owners have trouble finding apartments that accept pets, which is one reason pets are surrendered to shelters. Some local apartments are pet friendly, but have restrictions on dog breeds or only allow cats. In the article, Sunrise President Jesse Holland explains what makes Van Allen Apartments unique: it is the first local “Pets Are Welcome” community. This designation by the Humane Society of the United States means dogs and cats are welcome and there is no size, breed or weight restrictions on dogs. Van Allen Apartments in North Greenbush near Albany, NY is a joint project of the Amedore Group and Sunrise Management & Consulting. To prepare to welcome pets at Van Allen Apartments, Sunrise Management & Consulting staff reached out to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society for guidance and training for Van Allen Apartments staff.
